Back by popular demand, this season the short play festival includes 10-20 minute plays about fathers and mothers.

Season Five: 2003 - 2004

NO EXODUS
By Sloan MacRae, directed by Ken Kaissar
The World Premier of this ETC commission. A barefoot and stuttering shepherd is approached by God and asked to go back to Egypt to confront the powerful Pharaoh. Armed with little more than the phrase"I am that I am" he unhappily obliges. It takes God a while, but He finally convinces Moses to take on Pharaoh and free the slaves. This wildly hysterical ride through the stories of Moses, Adam, Abraham, David, and Jesus won rave audience reviews. "It's 1 hour and 15 minutes ... of PURE GOLD."

HUNGER

New York Premier. After accepting a romantic seaside marriage proposal, Diana becomes oddly ravenous. Her frantic search for food leads her on a fantastical journey that illuminates an ocean full of possibility. Marriage no longer seems the suitable dish for her appetite, but will she have the courage to explore the unknown? Hunger is a beautiful and inspiring tale of love, liberation, and larder.

SERIOUSLY SKETCH I: MELT THOSE WINTER BLUES
The first installment of our Sketch Comedy Series. Each installment is a one night only event featuring early career writers, directors, actors and designers at their most hilarious. Featuring: Queer Eye for Osama Bin Ladin, The Casting Couch, The Worlds Greatest Lover Tells All, The Mother of all Reality Shows, and more!

The third ETC Cabaret featured many of the musical theatre performers our audience loved in past cabarets.

WORDSUP! READING SERIES
Our ongoing reading series, WordsUp! began this season. The series is as a place for writers to hear their work, receive feedback, and meet directors with whom they may collaborate in the future.

DAD'S SHORTS
We initiated this one-day festival of 10-20 minute plays to meet the demands of early-career writers who are anxious to try out shorter works before festivals and competitions.

Season Four: 2002 - 2003

UNREAL CITY
The World Premiere of this collectively developed docu-drama by Bridgitte Viellieu-Davis, Directed by Daniella Topol. Unreal City wove 7 autobiographical stories from the New York Times Magazine into one story of the interconnectedness of strangers in New York City.

THE BOOK OF PHIL
A Workshop Production of this new musical by The Lovewell Theatre Project, directed by David Spangler, allowed for further development of this new musical about a 21st century dating service gone wrong. "In these days of computerized banking and identity theft, Creative Happenings brings dating services to a whole new level. Just give them a name and they'll tell you everything from her deepest secrets to family health history. Then, you're just a 'coincidence' away from making that special connection!"

OEDIPUS TYRANNOUS: WORKSHOP
This Workshop Production, directed by Mark Levine, used the classic text to explore the actor-director relationship in movement-based work.

Season Three: 2001 - 2002

THE TEMPEST
By William Shakespeare, Directed by Mark Levine
Our production of this classic text featured a female Prospero and was an Asian inspired take on love and the power of the mind

AN EVENING WITH VALERIE HARPER
Hosted by early career actor Danny Sandoval (The Tale of the Allergist's Wife) this intimate event was an interview on a life in the arts followed by audience questions on topics ranging from the differences between performing on stage and TV to life Mary Tyler Moore.

Season Two: 2000 - 2001

ANOTHER ROUND
In October 2000 ETC introduced New York to playwright J. Adam Russell with this production of his first play. Ripped from today's headlines of police misconduct, the play centers on the lives of four individuals whose futures are uncertain after the shooting of a black child by a white officer. Mr. Russell's history as a Pittsburgh Police Officer allowed him to give insight to a complex contemporary problem.

SPUN: AN ANCIENT URBAN MYTH
Zachary Morris's dance theater piece draws on ancient mythology (African, Aboriginal, Creole, and Greek) and the modern world (rave, hip hop, and club dance) to create a unique world where past and present exist simultaneously. "Athletic and exciting... engaging... Tori Sparks' Lady Mors is as smooth as cool silken sheets." (Dance Insider).

AMERICAN THEATRE CABARET
Back by popular demand, this cabaret featured early career musical theatre performers from Broadway and beyond.

Season One: 1999 - 2000

DEFYING GRAVITY
ETC's first production written by Jane Anderson and Directed by Kathryn Moroney was presented in March 2000. Curiosity and the delight of discovery have inspired men and women to new heights since the beginning of history. DEFYING GRAVITY celebrates the continuing spirit of human ingenuity and achievement even as it questions the required risks and unfortunate costs. The birth of gothic cathedrals, impressionist art, and distant galaxies intersect in a mosaic of memory at the crossroads where one young girl loses her mother to the Challenger space shuttle disaster.
